{"id":872027,"date":"2026-08-25T15:41:04","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T13:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=872027"},"modified":"2026-08-25T15:41:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T13:41:07","slug":"ramaphosa-says-south-africas-r264-billion-construction-site-is-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/872027\/ramaphosa-says-south-africas-r264-billion-construction-site-is-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa says South Africa&#8217;s R264 billion construction site is coming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s pipeline of infrastructure projects has grown five-fold since the beginning of the decade, with more than R264 billion of work expected to enter procurement over the next 12 to 18 months, President Cyril Ramaphosa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s so-called Strategic Integrated Projects portfolio has grown to R1.67 trillion from about R340 billion in 2020, Ramaphosa said at the third Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium in Cape Town on Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The projects span water and sanitation, transport and logistics, energy and electricity and municipal infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government will also begin publishing quarterly performance reports on the projects to track their progress, the president said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa is seeking to turn the project pipeline into investment as South Africa struggles to raise economic growth to levels needed to address\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-08-11\/south-african-unemployment-rate-jumps-to-four-year-high-of-33-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chronic unemployment<\/a>\u00a0and falling living standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The economy grew 1.1% in 2025, its strongest annual performance since 2022. Investment has remained a key weakness in the government\u2019s effort to boost growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa said gross fixed capital formation stood at about 14% of gross domestic product in 2025, less than half the 30% target set out in an economic policy plan with a deadline of 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infrastructure constraints have also weighed on economic activity, with logistical inefficiencies such as its poorly maintained railways among factors hampering manufacturing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction industry\u2019s contribution to South Africa\u2019s economy almost halved to 2.3% of value added in 2025 from 4.2% in 2008, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=19701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Statistics South Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government is seeking to improve the infrastructure pipeline\u2019s credibility by focusing on project preparation and financing rather than simply identifying potential projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s latest construction book, in which investors can view the project pipeline, contains more than 170 projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those, there are 55 with an estimated value of more than R407 billion under construction, while 32 worth about R48 billion have been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa has long promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/852438\/south-africa-under-construction-image-coming\/\"><strong>turn South Africa into a construction site<\/strong><\/a>, having allocated R1.07 trillion toward the buildout over the next three fiscal years in the 2026 budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa says R264 billion worth of infrastructure projects will kick off in the next 12 to 18 months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":59,"featured_media":865930,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":true,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"posted","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"2092246128460747110","_sma_facebook_post_id":"191437357620492_2186293068857759","_sma_instagram_post_id":"18425942953196065","_sma_x_attempts":1,"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[1571,543,12501],"class_list":["post-872027","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-infrastructure","tag-investment","tag-ramaphosa"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/872027","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/59"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=872027"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/872027\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":872030,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/872027\/revisions\/872030"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/865930"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=872027"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=872027"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=872027"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
