Northam Platinum Holdings jumped after disclosing that it\u2019s received an unsolicited approach from a \u201cmajor producer\u201d of platinum-group metals in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Johannesburg-listed miner\u2019s shares surged as much as 11% on Tuesday after the announcement, triggering a short suspension in trading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The stock later pared those gains to 5.3%, valuing the company at R122 billion ($7.6 billion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Northam\u00a0said\u00a0it has initiated a competitive process to \u201cconsider proposals from pre-selected third parties and other credible interested parties\u201d regarding potential transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That \u201cfollows an unsolicited, exploratory, non-binding approach from a major producer,\u201d the company said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe board believes that the process will crystallise the company\u2019s long-term value and strong industry position,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Africa is the world\u2019s top supplier of PGMs, with output dominated by four firms. Northam is the smallest of the quartet that also includes Valterra Platinum Ltd., Sibanye Stillwater Ltd. and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sector has experienced upheaval in recent years, with Anglo American spinning off its platinum business last year, which became Valterra. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Northam lost out to Implats in 2023 after a long-running takeover battle for Royal Bafokeng Platinum Ltd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The largest single consumer of metals is devices that reduce harmful emissions from diesel and gasoline vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Platinum has dropped 10% this year, and palladium is down 18%, after both metals rebounded strongly in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Naming the interested party \u201cis not warranted at this stage,\u201d Northam said. If \u201ca credible proposal\u201d is made and accepted, the identity of the company will be revealed, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Northam is expanding PGM output from its mines as the primary supply is forecast to decline in the years to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The firm produced almost 940,000 ounces of the metals last year and is targeting 1.5 million ounces by early next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company said it hasn\u2019t made \u201cany decision to pursue or implement a particular transaction or transaction structure.\u201d Any offers will be \u201cassessed against Northam\u2019s standalone prospects,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One Capital Advisory Ltd. has been appointed as Northam\u2019s advisor for the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
