{"id":872118,"date":"2026-08-26T09:59:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T07:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=872118"},"modified":"2026-08-26T10:15:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T08:15:29","slug":"strong-results-expected-for-major-south-african-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/872118\/strong-results-expected-for-major-south-african-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Strong results expected for major South African bank"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Discovery is expecting strong results for the year ended 30 June, with earnings per share growing by up to 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery was initially formed as a small risk insurance company by Adrian Gore and Barry Swartzberg, and has since expanded into banking, life insurance, and wellness programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group started Discovery Vitality, a system for tracking and rewarding healthy habits, in 1997 to encourage its clients to live healthier lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its foundation, the company has grown into a major name in South African banking and insurance, with a market cap of approximately R176 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent trading statement, the company reported that it expects its normalised profit from operations to increase by between 15% and 20% compared to its 2025 results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this, the company could grow by 13% to 18%, and its Vitality composite could grow by 18% to 23%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company is currently predicting that normalised headline earnings will rise by 18% to 23%, which it attributes to lower finance costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Normalised headline earnings are expected to increase by between 18% and 23%, enhanced by lower<br>finance costs, in line with the Group\u2019s planned reduction in financial leverage,&#8221; Discovery said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headline earnings for Discovery could increase by between 31% and 36%, following the &#8220;gain on termination of the lease through the acquisition of 1 Discovery Place, the Group\u2019s head office, as previously announced.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Discovery investors, earnings per share are expected to increase by 35% to 40%, to between R18.93 and R19.63.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headline earnings per share (HEPS) are also expected to grow, with the company forecasting a 31% to 36% increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HEPS would therefore fall between R18.96 and R19.68, rising from R14.47 reported in the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Normalised HEPS are forecast to increase by between 18% and 23%, to between R17.35 and R18.09, compared to the normalised HEPS of R14.70 in the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery&#8217;s full financial results for the year ended 30 June 2026 are expected to be released on 3 September 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Discovery is expecting strong financial results for the year ended 30 June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":131,"featured_media":859368,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"","sticky":true,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"posted","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"2092526444240863673","_sma_facebook_post_id":"191437357620492_2187033505450382","_sma_instagram_post_id":"18225514447324189","_sma_x_attempts":1,"footnotes":""},"categories":[961],"tags":[21660,26288,4883],"class_list":["post-872118","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-banking","tag-adrian-gore","tag-barry-swartzberg","tag-discovery"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/872118","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/131"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=872118"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/872118\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":872126,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/872118\/revisions\/872126"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/859368"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=872118"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=872118"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=872118"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
