Valterra Platinum was the company that made an informal approach to rival South African miner Northam Platinum Holdings, people familiar with the matter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group approached the miner exploring a potential deal that could create by far the world\u2019s largest supplier of the precious metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shares in Johannesburg-listed Northam briefly surged on Tuesday after the company said it had been approached by a major producer of platinum-group metals in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The unnamed company\u2019s interest was unsolicited, exploratory, and non-binding, Northam said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That company was Valterra, said two people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because the discussions were private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A spokesperson for Valterra said the company has seen Northam\u2019s announcement but doesn\u2019t \u201ccomment on M&A speculation\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A spokesperson for Northam referred Bloomberg News to its original disclosure, which said identifying the interested party \u201cis not warranted at this stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Africa is the world\u2019s top supplier of PGMs, for which the largest single source of consumption is exhaust-cleaning devices in fuel-powered vehicles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
PGMs are also used in jewellery, bullion and other industrial applications.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prices surged last year on a wave of investment demand, which has bolstered miners\u2019 fortunes after a multiyear bear market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rally has cooled this year, but spot platinum prices remain about twice as high as they were in early 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Firms like Valterra and Northam are sensitive to the mass-market adoption of electric vehicles, which don\u2019t use PGMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Northam \u2014 which has a market capitalisation of about R121.4 billion \u2014 is one of the country\u2019s biggest producers of the metals, after Valterra, Sibanye Stillwater and Impala Platinum Holdings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The approach concerned a potential transaction with Northam involving what was broadly presented as an \u201casset-level transaction\u201d or a \u201ccorporate transaction,\u201d Northam said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the approach, Northam initiated a competitive process to \u201cconsider proposals from pre-selected third parties and other credible interested parties\u201d regarding potential transactions, it said earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One Capital Advisory has been appointed as Northam\u2019s advisor for the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
