{"id":8726,"date":"2012-04-01T00:01:34","date_gmt":"2012-03-31T22:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=8726"},"modified":"2012-04-02T12:47:53","modified_gmt":"2012-04-02T10:47:53","slug":"alan-knott-craig-stopped-from-working-at-cell-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/8726\/alan-knott-craig-stopped-from-working-at-cell-c\/","title":{"rendered":"Alan Knott-Craig stopped from working at Cell C [April Fools]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> has successfully applied for an interdict to the North Gauteng High Court on Saturday (31 March 2012) to stop <a title=\"Alan Knott-Craig (Senior)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1642-Alan-Knott-Craig-%28Senior%29\">Alan Knott-Craig<\/a> from working for <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1641-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Knott-Craig was set to join Cell C as its new CEO on 1 April 2012, but Vodacom argued that his restraint of trade agreement with them prohibits him from joining a competing company within a three year period after leaving Vodacom.<\/p>\n<p>Knott-Craig\u2019s initial restraint of trade agreement, with a similar three year restriction, was signed when he left Vodacom in September 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Knott-Craig explained on the Redi Tlhabi show on 702, that his initial restraint of trade agreement only prohibited him to work for other cellphone companies in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>After <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> sold its stake in Vodacom, however, <a title=\"Vodafone\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1662-Vodafone\">Vodafone<\/a> wanted to stop Knott-Craig from working at Telkom and many other companies. The two parties negotiated a new deal which included a consultancy position for Knott-Craig.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shareholders and directors approached me and said they did not want me to work for anybody else, &#8216;plus you can consult for us as part of this deal&#8217;,\u201d said Knott-Craig.<\/p>\n<p>Knott-Craig accepted the deal, where he was essentially paid to not work for other companies.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QYfFiAMN2ME\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The contentious issue relates to Knott-Craig\u2019s consultancy agreement with Vodacom \u2013 a position for which he was paid a salary.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom argued that Knott-Craig\u2019s consultancy agreement with the company means that he was still employed by Vodacom as a consultant until 31 March 2012.
