A R17 billion digital classrooms project in Gauteng is in jeopardy because of burglary and theft.<\/p>\n
This is according to the SABC, who has reported that the Gauteng Department of Education is withdrawing as many as 88,0000 tablets from seven township schools due to a rise in the number of burglaries.<\/p>\n
The Smart Schools paperless education project was launched in Gauteng in January.<\/p>\n
The department had hoped to roll the project out to all Gauteng township and rural schools by the end of the 2017\/2018 financial year at an estimated cost of R17 billion.<\/p>\n
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi told SABC News<\/a> that he has written to the principals of schools.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019ve been a series of burglaries to our schools to steal the tablets that we’ve given to schools.\u00a0I don’t want to jeopardise the mid-year examinations because when these people break into our schools, even if they’re looking for these tablets, they end up taking other things. ”<\/p>\n “It affects the entire schooling environment.
