{"id":873747,"date":"2026-09-04T07:26:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T05:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=873747"},"modified":"2026-09-04T07:57:38","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T05:57:38","slug":"small-farms-now-being-targeted-in-south-africa-and-top-company-to-be-investigated-by-united-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/5-things\/873747\/small-farms-now-being-targeted-in-south-africa-and-top-company-to-be-investigated-by-united-states\/","title":{"rendered":"Small farms now being targeted in South Africa, and top company to be investigated by United States"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The South African rand strengthened on Thursday, buoyed by a weaker dollar and rising gold prices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors are closely watching an upcoming US jobs report for insights into the Federal Reserve&#8217;s next policy decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rand was trading at 16.0075 against the dollar, approximately 0.3% stronger than its previous close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2035 government bond also gained ground, following the upward trend in gold prices, as the country is one of the world&#8217;s major exporters of the precious metal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was up 1.4%, with Impala Platinum and MTN Group among the top gainers of the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US dollar index fell 0.6% against a basket of currencies, easing pressure on emerging-market currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors are now anticipating the non-farm payrolls report scheduled for Friday, following the ADP employment report released on Wednesday, which indicated a moderate increase in US private payrolls for August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other risk-sensitive currencies, the rand tends to react to global factors, such as US economic indicators, in addition to domestic economic data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A business survey released on Thursday showed that South African private-sector activity expanded slightly in August, supported by higher new orders, leading to increased output and purchasing activity.[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/south-african-rand-muted-ahead-business-activity-pmi-2026-09-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, 3 September 2026, the rand was trading at R15.98 to the dollar, R21.62 to the pound, and R18.58 to the euro. In the utility\u2019s financial report for the year ended 31 March 2026, Nyati said that Eskom was committed to applying only single-digit increases in electricity prices from now on.
