The Department of Agriculture has announced a major breakthrough in export negotiations with Egypt, opening up its market to South Africa’s red meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This follows two other major wins for South Africa’s agricultural sector in recent weeks: breaking a 10-year deadlock with India over citrus exports and the United States officially extending AGOA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp, the latest development with Egypt is a significant boost for the red meat sector, which has been beaten down by a massive Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the Agri North West Congress this week, Aucamp said that the countries concluded the negotiations on the Veterinary Health Certificate (VHC) governing the export of red meat from South Africa to Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This paves the way for South African beef and livestock producers to access Egypt\u2019s substantial consumer market, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shipments will be cleared to move once the final signatures have been formally appended to the agreement, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a significant opportunity for South African red meat producers and processors to expand their operations, diversify export destinations and grow their contribution to the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aucamp added that the department will continue to strengthen international trade relations and expand market access for the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery international market South Africa opens creates an opportunity for money to flow back into the rural economy and build commerce along our value chains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement follows another recent export win, with South Africa breaking through a 10-year deadlock in negotiations with India over citrus.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

India finally agreed to include additional treatment options for fresh citrus fruit from South Africa in mid-August, potentially opening up a market of almost 1.5 billion people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement is a significant step forward as the industry aims to expand its markets in countries such as India and China while reducing its reliance on Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Europe accounts for about 36% of South Africa\u2019s citrus exports, but it imposes plant health requirements that local producers consider unnecessary and unscientific.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a population of approximately 1.47 billion and as one of the world\u2019s largest and fastest-growing economies, India presents significant potential for South African citrus exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AGOA extension brings even more relief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump signed a funding bill into law this week, which also contained a two-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the new law, AGOA will expire at the end of December 2028, continuing until the end of the current US presidential term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it is not the decade-long extension that South Africa had hoped for, it is still a victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa is the largest beneficiary of the AGOA programme, giving local producers duty-free access to the US market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it affects various industries, agriculture is one of the largest beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to AgriSA, the United States accounts for between 3% and 6% of South Africa\u2019s total annual agricultural exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AGOA programme has created a strong dependence of specific value chains on US market access, the group said, which supports thousands of jobs in rural communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new law signed by Trump simply extends AGOA in its current form, which still includes South Africa as an eligible country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade union Solidarity has warned, however, that this is not guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa’s continued presence on the programme has long been in question, even before the Trump administration took office, and has since become a specific target of US lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list of eligible countries is reviewed once a year, and the next review is scheduled for January 2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
