{"id":874342,"date":"2026-09-08T09:54:34","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T07:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=874342"},"modified":"2026-09-08T10:53:42","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T08:53:42","slug":"end-of-a-winning-streak-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/874342\/end-of-a-winning-streak-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s winning streak is over"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s economy is expected to break its longest quarterly growth run in almost a decade as the war in Iran crimps domestic demand and key sectors accounting for almost a fifth of gross domestic product contract.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GDP likely shrank 0.1% in the second quarter, compared with an expansion of 0.5% in the prior three-month period, according to the median estimate of 14 economists in a Bloomberg survey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the first quarter, which reflected only the initial impact of the Iran war that began Feb. 28, the second fully captures the fallout from the conflict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fighting raged throughout the period, pushing up Brent crude and agricultural-input prices as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz\u2014a key waterway for about a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil and liquefied natural gas supplies\u2014was restricted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 25-basis-point interest-rate increase in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-28\/south-africa-hikes-rates-and-hints-at-more-tightening-to-come\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May<\/a>&nbsp;also began to filter through the economy, weighing on domestic demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher input costs from the war contributed to manufacturing and mining output&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=19874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contracting<\/a>&nbsp;1.5% and 2.7%, respectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the most part, we\u2019ve had very weak high-frequency data throughout the quarter; sentiment has been quite subdued,\u201d said Keabetswe Mojapelo, head of economic research at Old Mutual Ltd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While consumer-facing sectors have been resilient, \u201cit\u2019s really touch and go,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to get the true impact of rising inflation and the little tightening we had in monetary policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inflation has been above the central bank\u2019s 3% target since March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GDP outcome will probably influence the central bank\u2019s monetary policy committee\u2019s interest-rate decision on 23 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains to be seen how the MPC will weigh \u201cthe trade-off between weak growth and a strong rand versus above-target near-term inflation and a high oil price,\u201d Morgan Stanley economist Andrea Masia said in a note. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFading inflation-shock momentum suggests oil prices are no longer propagating widely, so at this point we remain of the view that the MPC will remain on hold later this month.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Winning-streak.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Winning-streak.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-874343\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Winning-streak.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Winning-streak-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Winning-streak-768x531.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A minority of economists in the Bloomberg survey expect growth, albeit at a slower pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Loos, an independent economist, predicts the pressure on the economy from the Iran war will be more pronounced in the second half of the year as higher inflation and interest rates slow spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe slowdown in real consumer spending from last year will be a key contributing factor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think a contraction yet, but still positive,\u201d Loos said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year, you\u2019ve got higher inflation, and it looks like we\u2019re going to have higher inflation for the year as a whole. We\u2019ve got interest rates rising slightly again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loos added that export-driven sectors will also probably see slower growth as a result of the war, as it impacts productivity and feeds through into household incomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retail and wholesale trade sales in the second quarter also came under pressure.
