{"id":874630,"date":"2026-09-09T16:41:38","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T14:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=874630"},"modified":"2026-09-09T16:43:04","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T14:43:04","slug":"disney-for-r49-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/874630\/disney-for-r49-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Disney+ for R49 in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Disney has announced that it will launch a new Disney+ app in South Africa on 9 September 2026 to replace its existing app, with a new subscription available for R49 per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MyBroadband <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/666321-new-disney-app-and-r49-plan-launches-in-south-africa.html\">reported on<\/a> the changes coming to the streaming giant, including several new features in its updated subscription model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said the new app will add several features to its existing offerings, including the ability to use its subscription while travelling abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The app will also add better personalised content recommendations and an updated kids mode with additional parental controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous Disney+ mobile package has changed to a basic package, which is priced at R49 without any promotional offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the mobile package was limited to small screens such as cellphones and tablets, the new basic package will be available on TVs and laptops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basic package will, however, have a streaming resolution limit of 720p \u2013 similar to a basic Netflix account, which costs R99 per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the new app will add several features, a basic Disney+ subscription will not allow users to download movies and series for offline viewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new Disney+ premium subscription will cost R179 and include all the features of a basic account, plus several additional features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes the ability to stream movies and series in 4K resolution and to stream concurrently on four separate devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another big change coming for Disney+ users is that the new app will not require a person&#8217;s cellphone number to log in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;After your first login\u202fto the new Disney+ app, you\u202fcan remove your mobile number from your MyDisney account at any time,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For existing users, the company said there will be no additional cost as previous plans will be migrated to the streaming service&#8217;s new offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you have a Disney+ Mobile subscription, your current plan will be discontinued, and you\u2019ll have access to the Disney+ Basic plan on the new Disney+ app at no additional cost,&#8221;
