South Africa\u2019s bond market remains incredibly attractive to international investors, with many
drawn to the strong returns and improvements in the South African environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonds are debt instruments that can be traded. Sovereign bonds are issued by a government and are considered more secure investments than equities, but often lack the upside potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa\u2019s 10-year government bond currently yields well over 8%. Yield measures total return when including price and interest payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to BusinessTech, Morningstar Investment Management South Africa Director Michael Dodd said that South Africa\u2019s government debt remains attractive to foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign investors had become net buyers of government bonds in 2024 and 2025 following years of net outflows. This optimism has not halted in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dodd said that the narrative surrounding South Africa has been positive for the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This included the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) and credit ratings upgrades from S&P and Fitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A primary surplus, where tax revenue is higher than government expenses excluding debt, and the Reserve Bank lowering its inflation target, have also been well received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While South Africa\u2019s debt remains attractively priced, Dodd warned that the yield differential between American and South African bonds is slimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American bond yields have risen to nearly 5% amid concerns over the United States\u2019 fiscal policy. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions, with lower demand for bonds pushing up yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American bonds are often seen as a proxy for risk-free returns, and a slimming of the yield differential can make South African bonds less attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa currently compensates bond investors with greater yields, given the nation\u2019s greater risk as a non-investment-grade country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economists have predicted that South Africa could return to investment grade in the next few years, and while this could lower yields, Dodd remains optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that a move into investment-grade territory would lower the borrowing costs for the National Treasury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would also expose South Africa to new indices that are limited to investment-grade bonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the yields offered by government bonds have been attractive to foreigners, the equity market has been less attractive, with local investors largely responsible for the recent gains on the JSE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dodd said that the lack of growth in the economy is a concern for foreign investors in the equity market, with retailers taking a strong hit in 2026 thus far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While there are concerns, Morningstar remains optimistic about several sectors in South Africa, including banking and industrials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gold and platinum miners have found 2026 more challenging compared to their massive gains in 2025, but Morningstar still sees value in diversified miners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naspers also looks enticing at current price levels, with the stock down 34.5% over the year, creating an appealing entry point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although there are opportunities for both equities and bonds for South African investors, Morningstar said that diversification outside of the two primary investment asset classes should be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonds are often seen as a way to hedge a portfolio and protect it from the volatility of equities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in South Africa, equities and bonds often move in the same direction during periods of global instability, as investors return to developed markets for guaranteed returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the return of Donald Trump in 2024, global tariffs, and the war in Iran, global instability is increasingly becoming the new norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the alternative investment industry in South Africa remains relatively small, Morningstar noted that there are growing opportunities in hedge fund investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hedge fund industry has grown massively from under R100 billion in assets under management in 2021 to over R200 billion in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While hedge fund returns are more akin to equities, Morningstar South Africa\u2019s Head of Investments, Sean Neethling, said that they are useful in portfolios to protect from downside risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neethling said that hedge funds are good for living annuities and rand-denominated portfolios requiring more stable incomes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
