The rand weakened on Wednesday, despite stronger-than-expected retail sales data and stable inflation expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rand traded at 16.28 against the dollar, which is 0.2% weaker than its previous close. The US dollar strengthened against a basket of currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts suggest that the rand may remain volatile in the near term, as it, like other risk-sensitive currencies, is influenced by global factors such as US economic data and monetary policy, as well as domestic developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A survey conducted by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) revealed that South African inflation expectations stabilised in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In separate data released by Statistics South Africa, retail sales rose by 3.4% year-on-year in July, accelerating from a revised 1.1% increase in June. Analysts polled by Reuters had anticipated a 0.9% rise in sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was down by 0.7%. South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond strengthened, with the yield down \u200b7.5 basis points to 8.735%. [Reuters<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n
