Moriel Infrastructure Group has severed ties with its executive chairman, Lawrence Mudzinganyama, after a video of the businessman threatening women in a Sandton restaurant went viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The viral video shows Mudzingwanyama threatening women in the restaurant, saying, “I’ll murder you now, and walk.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The video also shows the businessman claiming that the restaurant’s owner works for him and that he is a “wealthy man”. He also told the ladies he would “put a bullet in all of you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restaurant where the incident took place, Vlamo, has denied any association with the businessman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A video of the incident quickly spread on social media, prompting Moriel Infrastructure to sever ties with Mudzinganyama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company published a statement which said the group had “resolved to terminate its association with Mr Lawrence Mudzinganyama with immediate effect”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mudzinganyama was the company’s executive chairman, but Moriel said he would no longer represent them in any way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He will no longer represent, speak for, or act on behalf of Moriel Infrastructure Group in any capacity,” the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that the behaviour shown in the viral video was “inconsistent with the organisation’s values” leading to the board’s decision to remove Mudzinganyama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Moriel Infrastructure Group unequivocally condemns violence, threats, abuse and intimidation directed at women and vulnerable people,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident has also prompted the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to investigate Moriel’s appointment to two infrastructure-related contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“SANRAL confirms the existence of two contracts between itself and the Moriel Infrastructure Group on projects on the N1 and N2 national roads, respectively,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SANRAL’s acting CEO, Lehlohonolo Memeza, said the group would investigate these projects at the request of Transport Minister Barbara Creecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At the request of Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, SANRAL is also investigating whether the Moriel Infrastructure Group was lawfully appointed by the roads agency and whether it is fulfilling its contractual obligations,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after the viral incident, Mudzinganyama issued a statement in his personal capacity apologising for his actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I apologise unreservedly to the women involved in the recent incident at Vlamo restaurant in Sandton,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The aggressive and threatening language I used was unacceptable and unjustifiable, regardless of the circumstances that led to the disagreement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that he accepts responsibility for his actions, and would cooperate with investigating authorities and would seek professional help through an “appropriate conflict-management programme.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the viral incident, Vlamo issued a statement on its Instagram outlining the steps which had been taken following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 5-star restaurant said it was aware of the incident and confirmed that Mudzinganyama was not affiliated with the restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We want to make it clear that the individual involved is not affiliated with, employed by, or associated with our restaurant in any capacity,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The response comes after Mudzinganyama claimed in the video that the restaurant owner worked for him and that he owned the restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vlamo said the restaurant took immediate action after the video and clarified the steps it took in its aftermath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It confirmed that it had reported the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS) at midday on 19 September, and that a case number had been issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are cooperating fully with the authorities, and the affected parties will provide all relevant information, footage, and assistance required to support the investigation,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
