Telkom has expanded its LTE Advanced (LTE-A) network to an additional 22 suburbs across South Africa, the company announced on 19 May.<\/p>\n
The LTE-A expansion will cover areas in greater Johannesburg, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Tshwane.<\/p>\n
LTE-A is an enhancement of the Long Term Evolution standard which can theoretically support peak speeds of up to 1Gbps while the access device is stationary.<\/p>\n
Telkom first unveiled its LTE-A network \u2013 which runs on the company\u2019s 2.3GHz spectrum \u2013 at the MyBroadband Conference in October 2014, where it demonstrated peak speeds of over 380Mbps.<\/p>\n
\u201cTelkom is on a journey to deliver super-fast broadband on both wireless and fixed lines to cater for the specific needs and requirements of our customers,\u201d said Attila Vitai, managing director of Telkom\u2019s mobile and consumer arms.<\/p>\n
Telkom said speeds on its LTE-A network are comparable to speeds available over a fibre network, and offer an alternative to fixed-line broadband for high-speed connectivity.<\/p>\n
It also said it is one of the earliest adopters of the LTE-A technology in the world, and that the size of Telkom\u2019s LTE-A network is unrivaled in Africa.<\/p>\n
