{"id":876930,"date":"2026-09-25T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=876930"},"modified":"2026-09-25T10:12:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T08:12:41","slug":"checkers-brings-back-iconic-chocolate-bar-discontinued-over-10-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/876930\/checkers-brings-back-iconic-chocolate-bar-discontinued-over-10-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"Checkers brings back iconic chocolate bar discontinued over 10 years ago"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Checkers has brought back the Nestl\u00e9 Caravan, an iconic South African chocolate bar, after more than a decade off the shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This followed a public vote in which shoppers were asked which discontinued treat they most wanted to see return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The retailer recently asked South Africans on social media to choose their favourite discontinued chocolate from a list of nostalgic treats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The options included Tempo, Chocolate Log, Inside Story, FFWD, New Look, 7777, Holey Moleys, Yes\/No, Take Two and Cabrio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CheckersSixty60App\/posts\/its-out-the-group-chat-you-asked-and-we-listened-caravan-is-back-and-better-the-\/1146679371207079\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">winner was Caravan<\/a>, a Nestl\u00e9 chocolate bar that disappeared from South African shelves years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checkers has now teamed up with Nestl\u00e9 to bring the chocolate back in a limited-edition Caravan Tex Special Edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The return gives consumers who remember the original bar from childhood tuck shops, corner caf\u00e9s and pocket-money treats an opportunity to try a new version of the familiar brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou asked, and we listened. Caravan is back and better. The special edition collab is now available in-store and on Sixty60. Nostalgia delivered. While stocks last,\u201d said Checkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original Caravan bar had been absent from the market for many years before its surprise return in September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 did not publicly announce an exact year in which the permanent production of Caravan ended, although references to its disappearance can be found in consumer discussions dating back to the 2010s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has previously explained that changes to its confectionery portfolio can involve removing older products to make room for new offerings and respond to changing consumer preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caravan was not the only discontinued chocolate to attract strong support in the Checkers poll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chocolate Log was also among the treats that ranked highly. The Cadbury chocolate bar was launched in South Africa in 1986 after being developed locally by Barry Fern and marketed by Lois Wagner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It became one of the country&#8217;s most successful new snack launches of the decade.
