{"id":877273,"date":"2026-09-28T16:33:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T14:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=877273"},"modified":"2026-09-28T16:33:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T14:33:21","slug":"reserve-bank-governor-lesetja-kganyago-has-good-news-about-interest-rates-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/877273\/reserve-bank-governor-lesetja-kganyago-has-good-news-about-interest-rates-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Reserve Bank governor Lesetja Kganyago has good news about interest rates for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The South African Reserve Bank expects inflation to cool sharply and return to its 3% target by the end of next year, Governor Lesetja Kganyago said. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a speech on Monday (28 September) highlighting the cascading blows to the global economy, Kganyago said tighter monetary policy would help cool inflation, which has been above the SARB\u2019s goal since March, as supply constraints due to the wars in Ukraine and Iran keep energy prices elevated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe expect inflation to slow significantly next year, and we have increased our policy rate to make sure we get back to 3%,\u201d he told the Mistra Forum in Johannesburg, according to his speech text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWe currently expect to get there around the end of next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central bank raised rates by 25 basis points to 7.25% last week in response to large and sustained geopolitical shocks that it said were now more likely to trigger second-round effects and could entrench inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been about six months since we last hit our inflation target,\u201d Kganyago said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am not happy that we are missing \u2014 but six months is a lot better than 67 months, which is the interval since US inflation was last at target.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SARB adopted the 3% target last year, replacing a 3%-to-6% range that had been in place since 2000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shift has helped shield South African assets from a global bond repricing that\u2019s seen US long-dated yields hit their highest levels since 2007 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause our country risk premium has fallen, our longer-term borrowing costs are not rising in line with rich country benchmarks,\u201d Kganyago said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are also seeing that the rand is holding up well, with unusually low volatility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, South African economic growth remains tepid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The economy has expanded by less than 1% on average over the last decade and contracted by 0.2% in the second quarter, reflecting the weakness of underlying growth, which means it doesn\u2019t take much of a shock to push the number below zero, said Kganyago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a reform agenda, with good priorities, but progress is gradual\u2014and there are strong headwinds,\u201d the governor said, citing the Iran war and rising costs, even as other areas, including reliable electricity supplies after years of daily power cuts, improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe bad news offsets the good news.
