In February 2026, an operation by the South African Police Service led to arrests linked to alleged fraudulent grant payouts totalling R4.9 million.

SASSA also works with other government departments, including Home Affairs, to verify beneficiaries’ identities and establish whether recipients are still alive.

“If a person is deceased, we are able to access the information immediately,” Letsatsi said.

Despite the crackdown, Letsatsi said the agency does not automatically cancel grants when discrepancies emerge.

Beneficiaries are given opportunities to respond, explain their circumstances and provide supporting documents. “We don’t just abruptly wake up and cancel your grant,” he said.

He explained that the agency’s process involves payment delays over successive months, giving beneficiaries time to notice the interruption and approach SASSA to resolve the matter.

SASSA has urged beneficiaries selected for review to keep their contact details up to date and to respond to official requests.

The agency added that reviews are intended to ensure that assistance reaches people who continue to meet the eligibility requirements, while protecting public funds against fraud and improper payments.

More than 50,000 South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant recipients had their grants suspended.

[23
1334,853,26646
post-877359","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-fraud","tag-south-africa","tag-south-african-social-security-agency-sassa
["GET
