Gauteng’s Provincial Government has completed the appointment process for a new Gautrain operator for the next 15 years, with several changes planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rail service has operated in Gauteng since 2010, connecting the province’s two major cities, Johannesburg and Pretoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its inception, the Gautrain has expanded to include a dedicated bus service and smaller driver’s licence centres at some of its stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the appointment of a new operator, which has not yet been named, the high-speed train service said it would introduce several changes over the next 15 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These changes include increasing its fleet from 24 four-car trains to 32, a 33.3% increase in its total capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system said it would also increase the frequency at which its trains run and extend its operating hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plans to increase the Gautrain’s total capacity follow the system’s popularity among people moving between Gauteng’s two major cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the service was introduced 16 years ago, the Gautrain has recorded over 216 million passenger trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Gautrain has become an important part of Gauteng\u2019s economic and transport infrastructure, connecting people to employment, education, business, leisure and other opportunities across the province,” The Gauteng provincial government said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to increasing its overall passenger capacity, the Gautrain plans to upgrade existing trains to improve passenger amenities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service is also looking to expand its bus routes, which operate from stations, and improve its integration with the system’s trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans are also in place to upgrade Gautrain stations by expanding their digital services and implementing full backup power provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These interventions will be implemented progressively over the 15-year period and are intended to create a more frequent, accessible, connected, resilient and sustainable public transport service,” the Gauteng Provincial Government said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The provincial government said that these changes were possible with the appointment of a new operator for the rail service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The conclusion of the process also provides certainty for the continued operation of the Gautrain while creating an opportunity to unlock further value from one of Gauteng\u2019s most important strategic infrastructure assets,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Gauteng Provincial Government will continue to work with the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the transition into the new operating phase is managed effectively.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the recently announced changes, the Gautrain has several major changes planned for the rail service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transport system previously announced that plans were underway to expand the number of its lines and stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service proposed several new stations, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
