{"id":877970,"date":"2026-10-02T14:17:53","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T12:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=877970"},"modified":"2026-10-02T14:17:56","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T12:17:56","slug":"shoprites-new-store-taking-over-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/877970\/shoprites-new-store-taking-over-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Shoprite&#8217;s new store taking over South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Shoprite has announced the opening of its 50th Uniq by Checkers clothing store in Cape Town, as the company continues to expand the brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new store is located in Sea Point, Cape Town, which the company said, &#8220;marks a significant moment for a brand that is redefining what customers can expect from everyday clothing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shoprite launched its fashion brand in 2023 and has since grown its footprint to eight of South Africa&#8217;s provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company saw strong growth in the last financial year, opening 13 new outlets for the fashion brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This momentum reflects the strong customer demand for well-made clothing that delivers on quality and style without the premium price tag,&#8221; Shoprite said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has increasingly looked to expand in recent years, taking advantage of its large share of the retail market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last financial year, the company opened 262 new stores in South Africa, taking its total to 3,710 in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uniq&#8217;s head buyer, Benise Spangenberg, said reaching the 50-store milestone was a sign that their entry into the clothing market had been a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Reaching our 50th store is an incredibly exciting moment for us,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is a reflection of the incredible response we have received from our customers and their appetite for clothing that combines great fabrics, quality and an elevated sense of style at an accessible price.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Uniq brand began its journey in March 2023, when its first store opened at Canal Walk Mall in Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shoprite describes the fashion retailer as &#8220;fashioned on simplicity, comfort, superior fabrics and value&#8221; on its website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Catering for the entire family, the range consists of premium basics in a variety of colours and textures that are easy to mix and match.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A competitive market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/UNIQ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/UNIQ-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-878025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/UNIQ-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/UNIQ-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/UNIQ-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/UNIQ.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Shoprite is not the first of South Africa&#8217;s retailers to enter the fashion industry, with Woolworths historically being in the segment and Pick n Pay launching Pick n Pay Clothing in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since entering the market, Pick n Pay Clothing has expanded its footprint to 437 stores across the country, according to the company&#8217;s most recent financial results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While turnover for this segment of the company was modest in its last reporting period, its like-for-like sales growth over the last three-year period was 3.5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Over 3 years, Pick n Pay Clothing\u2019s like-for-like sales growth average of 3.5% remains strong relative to competitors,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Woolworths, the clothing sector has recently lagged behind the grocery sector, prompting the group to refocus its strategy on its food business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group said it would be &#8220;reorienting around its market-leading premium Food business \u2013 its strongest competitive advantage and primary engine of both brand equity and value creation,&#8221; in its latest financial results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCarefully selected adjacent categories will strengthen the customer proposition and the group\u2019s own ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Shoprite is seeing growth in the fashion industry, its footprint remains significantly smaller than that of its retail competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Uniq may have fewer total stores, it offers innovative features that keep it competitive in the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes being the first fashion retailer in South Africa to offer self-checkout services, according to Shoprite&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;UNIQ Clothing by Checkers is the first retail outlet in South Africa to offer self-service checkout,&#8221;
