MTN workers affiliated to the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have downed tools outside the operator’s head office in Johannesburg, according to eNCA<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The striking employees are demanding\u00a0a 10% pay hike and 16% bonus. MTN is currently offering a 5% salary increase, a 4% bonus, and a guaranteed 13th cheque.<\/p>\n

MTN SA’s chief human resources officer Themba Nyathi told Talk Radio 702 that the operator considered the\u00a0strike serious, due violence and intimidation which\u00a0took place outside its\u00a0campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had an agreement with the unions yesterday that there won\u2019t be any intimidation or any violence,\u201d said Nyathi.\u00a0According to MTN, the union only has a 19% representation at the company. “It\u2019s not a recognised union,” he said.<\/p>\n

Despite this, MTN said it had come back with offers that far exceed the union\u2019s requests.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made it clear we\u2019re willing to negotiate, but MTN can\u2019t forever not recognise us. We\u2019ve made a huge impact in MTN. KZN will be on strike, Western Cape will be on strike, Mpumalanga will be on strike, Limpopo will be on strike, and the biggest of them all will be in Johannesburg,” said the CWU.<\/p>\n

MTN warned on 18 May that customer service will be affected by the strike, and preemptively apologised for any inconvenience subscribers may experience.<\/p>\n
