This figure was presented as an expectation rather than a confirmed adjustment.

The shutdown has also raised concerns about the potential impact on businesses, schools and transport, particularly as matriculants write their final examinations.

Mkhize rejected the argument that the economic disruption caused by protests should outweigh the financial difficulties facing ordinary South Africans, including parents struggling to afford transport for their children.

While the organisation described itself as law-abiding, Mkhize acknowledged that it could not guarantee how members of the public would react to mounting financial pressure.

“We are a law-abiding organisation, and we do everything and anything within the parameters of the law. But we cannot control the anger of the masses on the ground,” he said.

With road disruptions already reported in Johannesburg, motorists have been urged to monitor traffic updates, avoid affected routes and allow additional time for their journeys.

Mkhize said the central message of the shutdown was that ordinary South Africans could no longer continue absorbing the rising cost of fuel and its knock-on effects on household budgets.

South Africans can expect protests and possible road disruptions as a national shutdown over rising fuel prices gets underway on Monday, 19 October 2026.

[9876
26802,2923,6163,853
post-880330","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle","tag-concerned-citizens-of-south-africa","tag-petrol-prices","tag-protests","tag-south-africa
["GET
