for any taxpayers earning over R500,000 in South Africa

The 2026 tax season for individual taxpayers will close this week, with Friday, 23 October, as the last day to file tax returns or challenge auto-assessements.

Any taxpayers who have not yet done so will soon face potential fines and penalties if they fail to meet their obligations.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has warned taxpayers that they face steep penalties for missing tax return deadlines.

These penalties escalate based on a taxpayer’s income, reaching up to R16,000 per month for high-income earners—those earning above R500,000 per year.

Under South African law, submitting tax returns is compulsory, and failing to do so is a criminal offence.

According to SARS, those earning under R500,000 a year from a single employer in 2026 are not required to file a tax return this year.

Those earning below that threshold are exempt from mandatory filing, provided they meet the requirements.

According to tax experts, however, even those who believe they are exempt should proceed with extreme caution.

If SARS’ records reflect an outstanding return, administrative penalties may be imposed for non-submission.

Experts advise that where a taxpayer has an active income tax reference number, it is generally advisable to submit a return.

If taxpayers do not submit their returns on time, penalties are likely to follow.

SARS uses a dual system of fixed-rate administrative penalties and interest charges, meaning that missing a deadline can lead to a penalty that escalates over time.

If an income-tax return is submitted after the end of the filing season, administrative penalties can be imposed and can increase monthly.

Notably, these penalties are not one-off and can be repeated monthly until the missing tax return is submitted or until the limit is reached.

The limit on monthly penalties is up to 35 months if SARS has the taxpayer’s address, and 47 months if the address is outdated.

According to SARS, penalties are based on income.

Sliding-scale late tax returns

<table also marks the close of the window for auto-assessed taxpayers to challenge their 2026 evaluation.

While auto assessments rolled out in the first two weeks of the season—and tax refunds were issued within 72 hours—taxpayers had the opportunity to check and correct any issues with their assessment.

Any taxpayers who flagged problems, such as missing information or incorrect data, were put on a manual filing path.

However, anyone who flagged a problem and forgot to submit corrections is also on the 23 October deadline to file.

The good news for tardy taxpayers is that missing the deadline isn’t the end of the road.

According to tax experts, while taxpayers cannot simply file after the deadline, they can request an extension from SARS.

However, this must be accompanied by valid reasons for missing the deadline—such as illness, missing documents, technical issues or other mitigating circumstances.

SARS has to approve the request, which will be communicated via official channels, along with a new deadline for tax filings.

Notably, provisional taxpayers and trusts still have until 22 January to file their returns.

Tax season 2026
