Patrice Motsepe scores R28 million payday

Patrice Motsepe earned over R28 million in the last financial year for his executive position in African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), despite leaving the position in February.

Motsepe was the founder of ARM, which was formed in 2003 through the merger of two large mining companies, making it the first black-owned mining company in South Africa.

Following the company’s success, Motsepe became the first black South African billionaire in 2008, according to Forbes.

Today, Forbes estimates his net worth at approximately $3.4 billion (R56.7 billion), making him the 1,243rd richest person in the world.

In February 2026, Motsepe stepped down from his role as executive chairman of ARM and as an employee of the company.

The decision followed new simplification rules from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, which meant that Motsepe could not serve as the company’s chairman and executive director simultaneously.

While Motsepe left his executive position on 16 February, he stayed with the company as a non-executive chairman.

“I look forward to continue contributing to the global competitiveness of ARM in my new capacity as non-executive chairman,” he said at the time.

“I have undertaken my new role as non-executive chairman to ensure compliance with the Listings Requirements.”

Despite stepping down from the executive role, Motsepe was still the highest-paid ARM executive in the 2026 financial year.

His total executive remuneration for the year, from 1 July 2025 to 15 February 2026, was approximately R28.5 million, which includes basic pay and other incentives.

The second-highest-paid executive was the group’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Phillip Tobias, who earned R28.1 million in total remuneration.

The largest contributor to Motsepe’s remuneration was long-term incentives, which are typically awarded for meeting certain performance targets.

Motsepe took home roughly R12.8 million in long-term incentives in the 2026 financial year, more than R5 million more than what Tobias earned from the same area.

Patrice Motsepe’s remuneration as executive chairman

<table ARM.

These earnings are split between attendance and retainer fees for the board and committee attendance fees, with remuneration for the board accounting for the bulk of his earnings.

While Motsepe earned millions in remuneration for his roles in ARM, his largest earnings come from his significant stake in the group.

He currently has over 91 million shares, owned indirectly, in the mining giant, which is worth approximately R13.6 billion based on ARM’s closing share price on 27 October 2026.

For the 2026 financial year, ARM declared a final gross dividend of 700 cents, meaning Motsepe would earn roughly R638 million from his stake in the group.

The dividend for the 2026 financial year was 16.7% higher than the previous period, reflecting the company’s improved revenue and profits.

Revenue for the group reached R16.3 billion in 2026, over R3 billion higher than the prior year at R13 billion.

The group also saw its profits for the year rise from R509 million in 2025 to approximately R5.2 billion in 2026.

ARM was not the only mining group to see profits soar in the last financial year, as high commodity prices at the start of 2026 boosted the earnings of several companies.
