The rand was under pressure in early trade on Wednesday as higher oil prices fuelled inflation concerns, while the US Federal Reserve held interest rates steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fed opted to delay any changes to borrowing costs until after next week’s US midterm elections while it awaits further data on inflation, which the central bank said “remains elevated.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping US interest rates steady is generally a mixed-to-slightly positive development for the South African rand (ZAR) in the short term, though a hawkish stance from the Fed limits major gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rand traded at 16.68 against the dollar, down 0.2% from its previous close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oil prices rose more than 1% on Wednesday after an attack on a refinery in Saudi Arabia renewed concerns about supply risks from the major exporter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ETM Analytics said the rand could weaken beyond the 17.00-per-dollar level if rising oil prices and Fed-related pressures persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the absence of major domestic data, the rand, like other emerging market currencies, tends to follow global factors, including US economic releases and geopolitical developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was down about 0.2% in early trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond weakened in early trading, with yields rising 2 basis points to 8.6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, 29 October 2026, the rand was trading at R16.62 to the dollar, R22.13 to the pound, and R18.51 to the euro. Gold is trading at $4,045.80, while oil prices are at $114.10 a barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
