Pick n Pay has rolled out a new initiative to replace tipping car guards in South Africa, as customers increasingly move towards cashless payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When shopping at Pick n Pay, customers can now buy “appreciation vouchers” which can be given as tips for car guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vouchers are sold in R5, R10 and R20 denominations and can then be redeemed at Pick n Pay stores for groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The vouchers can be purchased at till points at Pick n Pay stores nationwide and given to anyone as a token of appreciation,” Pick n Pay described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The retailer explained that the nationwide implementation of this initiative follows the success of a similar programme at one of its Cape Town stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The franchised store started selling R5 vouchers for its store to give as tips, which Pick n Pay called “a simple solution to a familiar dilemma.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“While cashless payments are convenient for consumers, they can create challenges when people want to tip but no longer carry cash, and the recipient cannot accept digital payments, such as QR code payments,” the retailer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Africans are increasingly adopting digital payments as the norm, with support for cashless transactions growing among businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a recent study, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) found that 29% of citizens prefer electronic payments exclusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study also found that 31% of South Africans prefer digital transactions but are comfortable using cash, while 19% exclusively prefer cash. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pick n Pay said its new appreciation voucher initiative was a way to address the growing number of customers without cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Appreciation Vouchers give customers another way to say thank you when they don\u2019t have cash on hand,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“For customers who want to recognise the people who help them throughout the day, the voucher offers a practical alternative to cash \u2013 and another way to say thank you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vouchers are valid for three years after issuance and do not have to be redeemed at the same store where they were purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The vouchers are valid for three years and can be redeemed for groceries at any Pick n Pay store nationwide,” the group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash, and each one must be fully redeemed in a single transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Each voucher must be redeemed in full in a single transaction, with the shopping basket value equal to or greater than the voucher amount,” Pick n Pay said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
