Diesel purchases were up 400%.

October saw petrol prices surge to over R30 per litre, with a R3.33-per-litre hike at the pumps.

This was similar to the May increase, where purchases also surged by 300% and diesel by 450% and was much higher than the 200% seen during a typical price hike.

May saw petrol prices shoot up by R3.27 per litre.

The price hikes began in March 2026, following the United States’ launch of its war against Iran on 28 February.

Looking at November, month-end recovery data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) indicated under-recoveries of around R1 per litre.

When factoring in the National Treasury’s announced fuel price relief for the month, this should swing the result into a small cut in prices this week.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources is expected to announce the official changes for November, ahead of implementation on Wednesday, 4 November.

Month

Petrol 95

Diesel 0.005%

March

+R0.20

+R0.65

April

+R3.06

+R7.51

May

+R3.27

+R5.27

June

+R1.43

-R2.62

July

-R1.96

-R3.59

August

-R0.52

+R1.23

September

+R1.34

+R3.15

October

+R3.33

+R3.24

Total difference

+R10.15

+R14.84

Goodbye to holiday travel

Discovery noted an interesting trend in its data: while motorists are changing how they buy fuel, everyday driving remains largely unchanged.

While trips dropped amid price hikes, daily commutes weren’t as affected.

In April, trips fell by 10% and kilometres travelled by 9%.
