Unfortunately, the economy continues to struggle to generate sufficient jobs,” it said.

In the second quarter of 2026, the country’s unemployment rate reached 33.6%, an increase from the previous quarter’s 32.7%.

Job creation has been a persistent issue for South Africa, which consistently ranks among the countries with the highest unemployment rates in the world.

In the second quarter of 2026, Nedbank also flagged deteriorating financial conditions as a concern for personal finances.

It said that the sharp rise in fuel prices had increased inflation in the country, and that this pressure was expected to continue.

“The sharp rise in fuel prices caused by the surge in global oil prices in the wake of the US-Iran conflict pushed inflation and inflation expectations higher,” Nedbank economists said.

A worrying outlook

Nedbank chief economist, Nicky Weimar

Nedbank said it expects household finances to come under increased pressure in the short term, as previous temporary support fades.

“Household finances are expected to come under increasing pressure over the remainder of 2026 and into 2027,” it said.

“The temporary support provided by non-wage income growth, retirement savings withdrawals and the lingering benefits of previous interest-rate reductions is likely to fade.”

While this support wanes, other pressures are expected to become more pronounced for the country’s households.

“The adverse effects of higher fuel prices, accelerating inflation and tighter monetary policy will become increasingly pronounced,” Nedbank noted.

South Africa’s inflation rate has been a concern over the past year, consistently exceeding the country’s 3% target.

The rate peaked for the year in June, reaching 5%, as higher fuel costs impacted both household and business spending.

Fuel prices have surged since February 2026, following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, which has driven up global oil prices.

The inflationary pressure from the global conflict prompted the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) to hike interest rates twice so far this year, with Nedbank forecasting another increase in November.

“At this stage, we expect another 25-basis-points rate hike in November, taking the repo rate to 7.50% and the prime lending rate to 11%,” the bank said.

“The risk of another hike in early 2027 also remains elevated, particularly if conditions in global oil markets deteriorate further.”

Worryingly, Nedbank’s economists said tighter monetary policy may not be effective in curbing South Africa’s current high inflation.

“The current inflation shock is largely supply-driven, reflecting higher global oil prices and geopolitical developments rather than excessive domestic demand,” the group said.

“This limits the effectiveness of monetary policy in addressing the underlying source of inflation.”

While disposable income grew in the first half of 2026, Nedbank economists said the growth is not stable and that pressure could be mounting.

[11121
7530,1122,1799,3619
post-882971","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance","tag-inflation","tag-iran","tag-nedbank","tag-sarb
["GET
