Momentum Short-term Insurance, through its wellness and rewards programme called Multiply, has launched a free online tool that assesses the personal, home and environmental, and vehicle risk profile of South Africans.<\/p>\n
The Safety Score measures aspects of a person\u2019s safety and ranks them according to a grading scale.<\/p>\n
The tool then provides recommendations on ways to safeguard against potential risks and threats, based on that score.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an unfortunate reality that South Africa has one of the highest road accident and crime rates in the world. This new tool was developed to help people take simple steps to become more aware of everyday risks and dangers. It also recommends preventative measures to avoid risky situations and advice on how to stay safe,\u201d said Momentum’s Etienne du Toit.<\/p>\n
The Safety Score assesses how effectively South Africans protect their homes and vehicles, and offers suggestions on interventions, from installing burglar bars and linking to an armed response service to getting involved in community policing forums.<\/p>\n
According to the Department of Transport, there are currently more than 11 million vehicles on South Africa\u2019s roads. The concern, however, is that the number of vehicle-related deaths on our roads has been on the rise, with 287 people dying in accidents over the 2015 Easter weekend alone. Of those, 37% took place between 18h00 and midnight.<\/p>\n
These statistics reveal that driving after sunset is more dangerous \u2013 despite late night traffic being significantly less. Therefore, motorists could mitigate their risks on the road by avoiding late-night driving wherever possible \u2013 something that the Safety Score assessment tool will reveal.<\/p>\n
Moving onto crime statistics, the latest reports issued by the South African Police Services (SAPS) reveal that there were over 260,000 instances of burglary at residential premises,\u00a0 56 870 cases of motor vehicle or motor cycle theft, and more than 11,000 instances of carjacking reported during the 2013\/2014 period.<\/p>\n
