The City of Joburg plans to spend R1.2 billion on 1,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots in the 2015\/2016 financial year.<\/p>\n

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance Geoffrey Makhubo made the announcement in the city\u2019s recent budget speech, and said the hotspots will be installed before the end of 2016.<\/p>\n

Makhubo said the city\u2019s Good Governance Cluster would receive R7.8 billion for the 2015\/16 financial year, of which a portion will be used to upgrade Wi-Fi hotspots, computer hardware and software, and ICT infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The allocation for free Wi-FI hotspots follows an April 2014 statement by Joburg mayor Parks Tau which promised 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the city before the end of the mayoral term in 2016.<\/p>\n

The total budget for the City Joburg\u2019s 2015\/2016 financial year is R52.6 billion.<\/p>\n
