{"id":89002,"date":"2015-05-29T11:19:52","date_gmt":"2015-05-29T09:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=89002"},"modified":"2015-05-29T11:31:38","modified_gmt":"2015-05-29T09:31:38","slug":"watch-joburg-taxis-dice-with-oncoming-traffic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/89002\/watch-joburg-taxis-dice-with-oncoming-traffic\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: Joburg taxis dice with oncoming traffic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new YouTube video has emerged showing taxi drivers in Randburg, Johannesburg driving brazenly into oncoming traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0video, posted by Nevarda Wilson, shows a number of taxis within a short time endangering the lives of the country\u2019s road users by flagrantly flouting the law.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/Joburg-taxi-drivers-nabbed-for-driving-on-wrong-side-of-road-20150529\" target=\"_blank\">News24<\/a>, metro police arrested eight taxi drivers on Friday morning for the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Johannesburg Metro Police Department Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said another three taxi drivers were fined R1 000 each for negligent driving..<\/p>\n<p>Minnaar vowed that metro cops would continue to clamp down &#8220;until taxi drivers refrain from driving on the wrong side of the road during peak morning traffic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6K01FtCTD80\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Taxis are the most popular mode of transport in urban areas, with the industry consisting of approximately 150,000 public minibus taxis, earning an estimated turnover of R16.5 billion a year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The South African taxi industry plays an important role in the economy considering that the majority of South Africans are poor and dependent on public transport,&#8221; said road safety awareness group, Arrive Alive.<\/p>\n<p>The industry comprises more than 20,000 taxi owners and 200,000 employees, and accounts for 90% of the entire taxi market, and 65% of public transport methods, the group said.<\/p>\n<p>Alarmingly, however, of the 36 lives lost daily on the country&#8217;s roads on average &#8211;
