{"id":89424,"date":"2015-06-03T10:36:49","date_gmt":"2015-06-03T08:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=89424"},"modified":"2015-06-03T10:38:22","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T08:38:22","slug":"voice-over-wi-fi-service-launching-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/89424\/voice-over-wi-fi-service-launching-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"Voice over Wi-Fi service launching in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AlwaysOn, a subsidiary of Internet Solutions, has unveiled a Wi-Fi voice calling service for South Africa, using a network which currently exceeds 2,000 hotspots.<\/p>\n<p>By using a Wi-Fi connection, AlwaysOn would be able to bypass the country&#8217;s operators including MTN, Vodacom and Cell C.<\/p>\n<p>The company aims to boost its subscriber base, currently at between 700,000 to 900,000 per month who use its Wi-Fi network.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently many restaurants who offer free Wi-Fi access through AlwaysOn, including Mugg &amp; Bean, McDonalds, Wimpy, Woolworths, Seattle Coffee Shops, Colcacchios and Fego.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, CityLodge Hotels, Sun International, Tsogo Sun Hotels and Protea Hotels offer complimentary Wi-Fi access.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdlive.co.za\/business\/technology\/2015\/06\/03\/alwayson-voice-call-service-to-challenge-mobile-nets\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>BusinessDay reported that<\/strong><\/a> users of the new calling service will need to purchase a voice package to make calls. Customers will be allocated numbers within the 087 block of digits.<\/p>\n<p>AlwaysOn\u2019s Wi-Fi calling service will first be launched on the Android mobile operating system platform, with pricing details expected soon.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2014 Internet Solutions announced that it has increased its shareholding in AlwaysOn to 100%.
