FNB has started distributing credit cards with near-field communication (NFC) technology built in, to its clients.<\/p>\n
This allows the cardholder to make contactless payments, but is dependent on whether the retailer\u2019s point-of-sale system supports NFC functionality. If NFC is not supported, the credit card works via conventional chip-and-pin.<\/p>\n
The move by FNB follows Standard Bank\u2019s roll out similar dual-function cards in 2012, which incorporated both NFC and debit card functionality.<\/p>\n
FNB Credit Card CEO Chris Labuschagne said its customers will find that as their expired credit cards are replaced, the new credit card will have the contactless payment features.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe project has been ongoing and we already have a large number of these cards in circulation. The new cards are supplied with additional consumer information.\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
