{"id":90122,"date":"2015-06-08T20:30:58","date_gmt":"2015-06-08T18:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=90122"},"modified":"2015-06-08T23:06:13","modified_gmt":"2015-06-08T21:06:13","slug":"what-south-africans-think-about-zuma-for-a-third-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/90122\/what-south-africans-think-about-zuma-for-a-third-term\/","title":{"rendered":"What South Africans think about Zuma for a third term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey conducted by Afrobarometer shows that South Africans &#8211; and much of Africa &#8211; support the restriction of presidential terms.<\/p>\n<p>According to the barometer, about three-quarters of citizens in 34 African countries are in favour of limiting presidential mandates to two terms.<\/p>\n<p>These findings are counter to many claims made by African leaders seeking to extend their rule, saying it reflects &#8220;popular demand&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that a number of leaders have managed to circumvent term-limit rules to extend their tenure should not be interpreted to mean that Africans want a return to the era of presidents for life,&#8221; the Afrobarometer said.<\/p>\n<p>The Afrobarometer is a research project that measures public attitudes on economic, political, and social matters in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Across 34 countries, average support for presidential term limits was 73%. When the parliamentary-system countries are removed from the analysis, the average increases by 2 percentage points to 75%.<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa, 68% of the survey&#8217;s respondents said they were in favour of term limits &#8211; one of the lower percentages in the report, below even the likes of Zimbabwe, where 74% were in favour.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90124\" style=\"width: 571px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Support-for-presidential-term-limits.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90124\" class=\"size-full wp-image-90124\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Support-for-presidential-term-limits.png\" alt=\"Support for presidential term limits\" width=\"561\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Support-for-presidential-term-limits.png 561w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Support-for-presidential-term-limits-221x300.png 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Support for presidential term limits<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Afrobarometer&#8217;s survey sampling includes up to 2,400 individuals per country across several stages; starting in rural areas, and progressing to randomly selected households.
