Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its lithium-ion energy storage system, which looks set to take on the Tesla Powerwall<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The system is essentially a large battery which will store energy generated by a user\u2019s solar installation, which can then be used during power outages or when the traditional electricity grid is not suitable.<\/p>\n

Each battery pack will hold 2.5kWh of electricity, and eight units can be combined to hold 20kWh. The units are 46.3 x 42.5 x 29.5 cm in size, and weigh 28kg.<\/p>\n

Interested parties have been invited to register on Mercedes-Benz\u2019s German site, with deliveries scheduled to begin in September 2015. South Africa was not on the list of countries available on the registration site.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeveloped for demanding service on board cars, the Mercedes-Benz energy storage units meet the very highest safety and quality standards,\u201d said Mercedes.<\/p>\n

The battery system is schedule to be shown off at the Intersolar trade-fair in Munich from 10 to 12 June.<\/p>\n

Daimler International was asked about the battery system\u2019s availability and price in South Africa, but the company had not replied by the time of publication.<\/p>\n
