The Mookgophong local municipality in Limpopo is applying for a 35% electricity tariff hike, according to a notice published in Friday\u2019s Government Gazette.<\/p>\n
It is one of 9 local municipalities around the country applying for increases above the National Energy Regulator of SA\u2019s (Nersa) increase guideline of 12.2%.<\/p>\n
Mookgophong justifies the proposal by saying it \u201cneeds to maintain its rural network\u201d, according to the notice by Nersa of public hearings to be held on the proposed increases.<\/p>\n
The public hearings would be held in Pretoria on June 19.<\/p>\n
Next highest is the Gariep local municipality, in the Eastern Cape, which is applying for a 17% hike to \u201calign tariffs to benchmarks\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Endumeni local municipality in KwaZulu-Natal wants a 16% hike due to a high losses from illegal connections and electricity theft and to fund infrastructure development.<\/p>\n
The other local municipalities are Abaqulusi (15%), Cape Agulhas (14.9%), City of Umhlathuze (14%), Drakenstein (12.6%), Midvaal (14%), and Msukaligwa (13%).<\/p>\n
