Trade union Solidarity said acting Eskom CEO Brian Molefe\u2019s statement that a total grid collapse in South Africa was out of the question is “highly irresponsible”.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact that emergency plans for a possible two-week blackout have been compiled for cabinet, the City of Cape Town, and other metropolitan areas is proof of the fact that Eskom is not being honest with the public,\u201d said Solidarity.<\/p>\n
Solidarity contended that, while the risk of a total grid collapse is low, the public shouldn\u2019t be led to believe it is totally out of the question.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe public will not be able to count on government for help, should it happen. For this reason it is essential that members of the public prepare themselves for the possibility of temporarily having to cope without power.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said in the event of a total grid collapse the provision of essential necessities such as food and water would be curtailed.<\/p>\n
To assist the public to prepare for the eventuality of a grid collapse, Solidarity has compiled a two-week emergency plan for households.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe plan contains useful tips and advice on how one could cope without power and with minimum disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n
The emergency plan will be launched at the Solidarity KragDag Expo on 27 June 2015.<\/p>\n
