{"id":92094,"date":"2015-06-30T14:06:07","date_gmt":"2015-06-30T12:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=92094"},"modified":"2015-06-30T14:06:07","modified_gmt":"2015-06-30T12:06:07","slug":"we-dont-have-time-to-use-e-tolls-to-spy-on-you-sanral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/92094\/we-dont-have-time-to-use-e-tolls-to-spy-on-you-sanral\/","title":{"rendered":"We don&#8217;t have time to use e-tolls to spy on you: Sanral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the new e-toll dispensation is set to take effect in July, Sanral says it does not have the time to use the information gathered by it&#8217;s technology to spy on motorists.<\/p>\n<p>It follows an article by Jane Duncan, Professor of Journalism at the University of Johannesburg, in which she said that the panel sat up to assess the socio-economic impact of e-tolls last year, failed to address the impact of e-tolls on people\u2019s right to locational privacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read Professor Duncan&#8217;s article here: <a href=\"http:\/\/sacsis.org.za\/site\/article\/2403\" target=\"_blank\">The South African Civil Society Information Service<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Duncan noted that academics globally and locally have warned transport authorities intent on rolling out Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS\u2019s) like Sanral\u2019s \u2013 where digital tools are used to monitor traffic, toll vehicles and anticipate crises \u2013 that they need to build systems with privacy in mind, otherwise they risk alienating the public.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sanral appears to be oblivious to the warnings,&#8221; the academic said.<\/p>\n<p>In its response, Sanral said that modern technology can be used for good or bad purposes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It depends, most often,\u00a0 on the intent of those who have access to it.
