Vodacom now offers 2G, 3G, and LTE coverage in the Gautrain\u2019s three underground stations: Rosebank, Sandton, and Park.<\/p>\n
The company said it has been working with the relevant government departments for the\u00a0past three months to roll out to the\u00a0underground stations.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always found it frustrating when I\u2019ve gone into one of the underground stations and couldn\u2019t connect, especially when I\u2019ve had some free time while waiting for the train,\u201d said Andries Delport, Vodacom\u2019s chief technology officer.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe pride ourselves on having the fastest and widest network in South Africa and now we can add \u2018deepest\u2019 coverage to that claim as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
The system is made up of distributed antenna systems located throughout the three stations.<\/p>\n
Each of these systems is connected via fibre-optic cable to network equipment located in Rosebank.<\/p>\n
2G, 3G, and LTE (4G) services will all be enabled with the solution.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the first phase of the process. Our next task is to work on ensuring that we have a seamless service throughout the Gautrain route. That means not dropping a call when you go into a tunnel. We\u2019re currently in talks with our partners to roll this out,\u201d said Delport.<\/p>\n
MTN meanwhile, said it has also installed a high speed network\u00a0 to go live on 3 July at the Park Station, Sandton and Rosebank stations. T<\/p>\n
he other stations will be covered by existing infrastructure.<\/p>\n
MTN also announced that it will be further deploying its network to blanket other parts of the Gautrain network.<\/p>\n
