{"id":92300,"date":"2015-07-02T11:51:17","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T09:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=92300"},"modified":"2015-07-02T11:51:17","modified_gmt":"2015-07-02T09:51:17","slug":"new-sabc-ceo-draws-mixed-reaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/92300\/new-sabc-ceo-draws-mixed-reaction\/","title":{"rendered":"New SABC CEO draws mixed reaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was mixed reaction to the announcement that Frans Matlala had been appointed SABC chief executive officer.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Alliance &#8220;tentatively&#8221; welcomed the appointment, which came a year after Communications Minister Faith Muthambi said she would appoint a new CEO in three months.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope it is a case of better late than never,&#8221; DA MP Gavin Davis said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is certainly cause for cautious optimism with this appointment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Fin24, Matlala, a consultant to the SABC for project management and strategic advisory services, has been a keen supporter of the broadcaster&#8217;s controversial chief operating officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_92302\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Frant-Matlala.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92302\" class=\" wp-image-92302\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Frant-Matlala.jpg\" alt=\"Frant Matlala\" width=\"233\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Frant-Matlala.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Frant-Matlala-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Frant-Matlala-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-92302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SABC CEO, Frant Matlala<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Matlala has held a number of senior executive positions at Standard Bank, African Life SA, First National Bank and South African Breweries, and lists a graduate diploma in engineering, a B.Sc in chemistry and a M.Sc degree.<\/p>\n<p>The appointment of Matlala comes almost a year and a half since Lulama Mokhobo quit in February 2014 without any explanation after just 14 months into her five year contract.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said the DA was happy the new CEO was not Motsoeneng but it also hoped that Matlala will be able to stand up to the COO.<\/p>\n<p>Matlala had to learn from his predecessor&#8217;s experiences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Public Protector found that Ms Mokhobo\u2019s position was made untenable by Motsoeneng\u2019s campaign to bully and undermine her,&#8221; Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The key to Mr Matlala\u2019s success in this new role is for him to quickly stamp his authority as the top administrator at the SABC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Congress of the People said Matlala&#8217;s appointment was just window dressing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The appointment&#8230; reinforces the mutual admiration society at the SABC,&#8221; Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hlaudi Motsoeneng will effectively control the financial affairs and dig the SABC into an even deeper hole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cope said it was well known that Matlala and Motsoeneng had a &#8220;close and unhealthy&#8221; relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Bloem also complained about the lack of transparency in making the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said the DA had questions about the appointment process.<\/p>\n<p>There were only six SABC board members.
