Telkom said in its latest annual report it will make \u201caround 200 of our exchanges available to Internet service providers on an open access basis during 2015\u201d in an effort to stimulate access to broadband.<\/p>\n
While the project is still in development, Telkom spokesperson Jacqui O\u2019Sullivan provided information on the the company\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n
She said Telkom is looking to run pilot projects based on data uptake to fully realise the profitability of its exchanges.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe this would be the right basis through which we could create an environment for open access in future,\u201d said O\u2019Sullivan.<\/p>\n
Telkom is initially rolling out this initiative in areas where it is easier to determine the total cost of service to refine the model.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will look at rolling out open access once we have constructed a repeatable model for this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Local Internet service providers said they have not been informed about the initiative, which makes it difficult for them to comment.<\/p>\n
MWEB CEO Derek Hershaw said they have not heard anything from Telkom. He added that they do not know what Telkom\u2019s plan is, or how it will play out.<\/p>\n
