{"id":95343,"date":"2015-08-10T09:00:44","date_gmt":"2015-08-10T07:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=95343"},"modified":"2015-08-07T16:56:22","modified_gmt":"2015-08-07T14:56:22","slug":"top-10-best-selling-cars-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/95343\/top-10-best-selling-cars-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 10 best-selling cars in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New data by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.autotrader.co.za\/car-news\/volkswagen\/polo\/ec8158fd-6a84-4990-beca-0940ece60c4b-south_africa%E2%80%99s_top_10_best-selling_cars\" target=\"_blank\"> AutoTrader<\/a>, a motor vehicle publishing company, reveals the\u00a0top-selling passenger vehicles in South Africa for July 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Cees Bruggemans, consulting economist at Bruggemans &amp; Associates noted this week that new SA passenger car sales shocked in July, down by 8.8% on a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>January-July also shocked, now down by 4% year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p>Commercial vehicle sales did better, he said, adding that while the local economy is doing poorly, it hasn&#8217;t been shot, yet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It still makes total vehicle sales abysmal reading at -6.1% in July yoy and -2.5% year to date.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why do I like motor trade data so much? It isn&#8217;t this year distorted so much by base year strike weakness, like mining. It isn&#8217;t capped so rigidly by electricity constraint as heavy industry. It isn&#8217;t dependent on Mother Nature as much as agriculture, laid low by drought, or distorted by imports,&#8221; Bruggemans said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the current gloom, AutoTrader pointed to the top 10 cars that are outperforming the rest in SA:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Volkswagen Polo Vivo &#8211; 2871 units\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Vivo is the best selling car in SA. VW&#8217;s are renowned for keeping their value too.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From <strong>R144,900<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Volkswagen Polo &#8211; 2084 units<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Downsized, efficient turbo engines, good looks and German build quality are the key to the Polo\u2019s positive sales figures.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From <strong>R194,600<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0 Toyota Corolla, Quest &amp; Auris &#8211; 1919 units<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Toyota only provides aggregated figures, AutoTrader noted, adding that the Auris has a face-lift, the spacious Quest offers great value for money, and the family-friendly Corolla is one of the country&#8217;s staples.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From\u00a0<strong>R183,900<\/strong> for the Quest<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0 Toyota Etios &#8211; 1515 units<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Etios has one of the liveliest engines on the low-budget block &#8211; 1.5-litre engine (66kW \/ 132 Nm). The Etios sedan has a sizeable boot, but it\u2019s not a looker.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From <strong>R134 ,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0 Ford Fiesta &#8211; 948 units<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AutoTrader notes Ford\u2019s award-winning economical 1.0 litre turbo engines as a highlight. The Fiesta offers quite a sporty drive, and is low in running costs.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From <strong>R199,900<\/strong> for the Fiesta 5-door 1.0T Ambiente auto<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.\u00a0 Renault Sandero &#8211; 899 units sold<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>High spec levels and low fuel consumption sum up the Renault Sandero, along with its price.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: The Sandero 66 kW turbo Expression variant costs <strong>R129,900<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0 Ford Figo &#8211; 893 units sold<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The generously specced Figo is easy on the wallet. The entry-level Figo 1.4 Ambiente has Ford\u2019s ICE\u00a0 (In-car Entertainment) system, which includes Bluetooth.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From <strong>R144,900<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>8.\u00a0 Ford EcoSport &#8211; 732 units sold<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Its compact size and good ride quality make the EcoSport a good city car.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From <strong>R210,900<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9.\u00a0 Toyota Fortuner\u00a0 &#8211; 717 units sold<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Good resale value and aftersales service, the reliability of the Toyota badge and low maintenance costs keeps the Fortuner near the top.<\/p>\n<p>Sale price: From<strong> R391,700<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10.\u00a0 Datsun GO (704 units sold)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lambasted Datsun GO proves that cars don\u2019t need ABS or airbags to sell.
