Telkom has decided to extend the application process for staff to take up voluntary severance and voluntary early retirement packages.<\/p>\n
Telkom is currently in the process of letting go around 4,400 workers. A further 3,400 workers are expected to be moved to outsourced companies.<\/p>\n
As of the end of July, 2,400 workers had accepted the voluntary packages, the group said.<\/p>\n
In a note to staff, Thami Msubo, chief of human resources, said that during the past two weeks a number of representations have been made asking for an extension of\u00a0its VSP and VERP process.<\/p>\n
“In some instances, staff were off sick and were therefore unable to make informed and researched decisions,” said\u00a0Msubo.<\/p>\n
“In other cases, employees were on leave and unable to return ahead of the closure date of 27 July 2015.”<\/p>\n
“We have sought to make sure that all our employees are treated fairly. We have therefore decided to extend the VSP and VERP application process, which is available on the SAP system.”<\/p>\n
Telkom stated\u00a0that the extension did not represent a new retrenchment\u00a0process, adding that employees whose VSP or VERP applications were declined during the previous application process are excluded from the extended process.<\/p>\n
This extension of the VSP and VERP application process will close on 17 August 2015.<\/p>\n
