Vodacom Business<\/a> and Telkom<\/a> are moving away from WiMax<\/a> in preference of other wireless technologies.<\/p>\n

Janine Rebelo<\/a>, executive head of access services from Vodacom Business, explained that they are currently finding other connectivity solutions more attractive than WiMax to suit their clients\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n

Industry rumours suggest that Vodacom Business has completely stopped taking new WiMax orders, and is actively migrating its existing WiMax clients to alternative solutions.<\/p>\n

However, Rebelo said that, while Vodacom Business is evaluating its position with respect to WiMax, no formal decision has been taken.<\/p>\n

Since Vodacom was using iBurst\u2019s WiMax network to serve its needs, the value and sustainability of iBurst\u2019s WiMax network is uncertain.<\/p>\n

iBurst<\/a> spokesperson, Sheila Bhengu<\/a> said that she could not comment on Vodacom\u2019s strategy, but did indicate that companies are looking at technologies other than WiMax.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many other technologies that may be more cost effective and versatile [than WiMax], and as a result, customers may be moving and\/or looking into these alternative technologies,\u201d said Bhengu.<\/p>\n

Telkom is also moving away from WiMax. The company said that due to the evolution of the Telkom Network Strategy, it has suspended the deployment of additional base stations for its WiMax network.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Company is in the process of migrating existing WiMax customers to an equivalent service offered on Telkom\u2019s WCDMA network or other suitable technologies,\u201d said Telkom.<\/p>\n
