The ANC wants to introduce a sport ticket levy in South Africa, which will see the Department of Sport and Recreation take a 5% cut for tickets sold at professional sports events in the country.<\/p>\n
This is according to a report in the Sunday Times.<\/p>\n
News of the potential ticket levy emerged in March, and the proposal has now been included in discussion documents for the ANC’s national general council – scheduled to be held in October.<\/p>\n
The levy may lead to a hike in ticket prices, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n
Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula told the Sunday Times that it “was time the sports industry was taxed like any other”, referring to the ticket levy.<\/p>\n
“Sport is a major contributor to the GDP, but nobody is taxed for that,” he said.<\/p>\n
Sports bosses have expressed their disapproval of the ticket levy, with Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat saying the tax will hit sport fans’ pockets.<\/p>\n
“Raising revenue in the form of a ticket levy will trigger some concern for us as we are already challenged with filling the stadiums,” he said.<\/p>\n
