A new video-on-demand player backed by Hong Kong-based ICT firm PCCW aims to take on Netflix, Showmax, FrontRow, and Vidi in South Africa.<\/p>\n
Bloomberg reported that<\/strong><\/a> PCCW, which is backed by billionaire Richard Li, will be unveiled to South Africa as early as next week.<\/p>\n Bloomberg reported that PCCW recently bought a majority stake in mobile video-on-demand service Vuclip and wants to expand the service into new territories, including Africa.<\/p>\n The news follows the launch of ShowMax in South Africa on 19 August, which offers\u00a0a subscription video-on-demand service for R99 per month.<\/p>\n ShowMax is a subsidiary of Naspers, the JSE-listed media giant, which has a market cap of R728 billion.<\/p>\n ShowMax subscribers have access to over 11,000 hours of TV shows \u2013 made up of over 750 titles, 850 seasons, and 19,000 episodes.<\/p>\n Netflix meanwhile, aims to launch in South Africa in 2016.<\/p>\n ShowMax is better than Netflix: Naspers<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Netflix competitor ShowMax launches in SA<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nMore on Netflix and ShowMax<\/h3>\n
