Eskom has announced that it will implement stage 1 load shedding this evening, from 19h00 to 22h00, due to a loss of generating units.<\/p>\n
This follows about 5 weeks that the power utility has managed to keep the country\u2019s lights on, following a gruelling period of load shedding during winter.<\/p>\n
Eskom cautioned on Sunday that the national power system will be tight in the coming days owing to maintenance work.<\/p>\n
The planned maintenance will take place at the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric scheme together with Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), the group said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a result, South Africa will get 650 MW instead of the 1 500 MW that is normally imported from Cahora Bassa on a daily basis,\u201d Eskom said.<\/p>\n
Although Eskom has managed to keep the power grid stable for the past 5 weeks, it has been well-established that it would remain strained for the next three years at least.<\/p>\n
Eskom, government and industry experts have previously warned South Africans to expect load shedding to feature regularly until more energy projects come online.<\/p>\n
