WAPA<\/a> said today (16 April 2012) that its main objectives for 2012 include being an interface between the government regulator (ICASA<\/a>), network operators, service providers and consumers – making the most of TV White Spaces and growing the organisation via marketing initiatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur focus will be to promote practical regulation of TV White Spaces (TVWS) by speaking at various conferences during the year,\u201d stated WAPA Chairperson, Christopher Geerdts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong these initiatives, we will be looking out for (projects) to promote TVWS.\u201d<\/p>\n

WAPA plays a significant role in addressing wireless regulatory and spectrum issues in the country.<\/p>\n

WAPA\u2019s aim to become an industry-representative body, recognized under law by the regulator, enters its final stretch this year, with Ziggy Heuer<\/a> heading the project with the assistance of Ellipsis Regulatory Solutions<\/a> – legal advisor to WAPA that also keeps members up to date with regulatory issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur website overhaul in 2011 has greatly increased visitor numbers and awareness of wireless internet service providers. The \u2018Check Coverage\u2019 and \u2018Member Directory\u2019 pages on the website allow South African citizens to look for wireless broadband coverage in their area,\u201d explained Deputy Chair, Mohammad Patel.<\/p>\n

WAPA\u2019s treasurer for two years running, Abraham van der Merwe, is optimistic after a healthy 2011 financial year.<\/p>\n

\u201cSponsorships and advertising from the many players – including the likes of Google<\/a> – for various events, and a 20% membership growth in 2011, has helped to keep WAPA in the black. An \u2018Income Generation Workgroup\u2019 has been formed to ensure that WAPA\u2019s finances stay on track in 2012,\u201d concluded van der Merwe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
