{"id":99250,"date":"2015-09-23T15:06:22","date_gmt":"2015-09-23T13:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=99250"},"modified":"2015-09-23T15:06:22","modified_gmt":"2015-09-23T13:06:22","slug":"fresh-retrenchment-pain-for-former-telkom-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/99250\/fresh-retrenchment-pain-for-former-telkom-employees\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh retrenchment pain for former Telkom employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Telkom employees that had been transferred to Barloworld Logistics earlier this year as part of Telkom\u2019s section 197 business transfer process are facing retrenchments once again.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the trade union Solidarity after some of its members approached the trade union about it this week.<\/p>\n<p>In a presentation to trade unions on Tuesday (22 September), Barloworld Logistics indicated that it was planning to reduce its work premises from 35 to 17.<\/p>\n<p>This would mean that about 112 former Telkom employees that had been transferred to Barloworld earlier this year, would have to undergo a second restructuring process this year, Solidarity said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Marius Croucamp, head of Solidarity\u2019s Communication Industry, these employees have the choice to be transferred to Barloworld\u2019s premises in Boksburg. If they do not want to relocate, they will have the opportunity to apply for 16 vacant positions in other branches of the company, inter alia in Port Elizabeth, Witbank and Kwazulu-Natal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The reality is that there will once again be an upheaval in the lives of these employees because their place of work will change. In almost all the cases, the employees and their families will have to relocate. If they do not want to relocate, and if they are not appointed in one of the other 16 available positions at one of the other work premises, the employees will be able to apply for voluntary severance packages,&#8221; Croucamp said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are furthermore concerned about the fact that the Barloworld branch in Boksburg might now have too many employees and that there will ultimately be further retrenchments. We believe that during the initial section 197 process, Telkom should have foreseen the possibility that Barloworld would reduce its number of work premises.
