Joburg mayor sacks Pikitup boss amid corruption probe

 ·9 Sep 2016

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has reportedly give the green light for Pikitup’s managing director, Amanda Nair, to be sacked amid a corruption investigation.

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union originally made the allegation against Nair, noting that she was the reason for a protracted strike earlier in the year.

Nair was been placed on special leave pending an investigation earlier this year. However, Mashaba reportedly said that the issue around Nair had dragged on for just too long.

“It unfortunately has been holding delivery of services from our people, because the board was unable to put in the right type of structures so that we can put in people who can run our administration,” Mashaba said.

The board of Pikitup said in a statement on Friday that it has decided that it is in the best interest of the company to end the relationship of employment with Nair, with immediate effect.

Charges against Nair

The board said that following allegations made by SAMWU against Nair, an independent forensic investigation into these allegations was completed by SM Xulu and Qhubeka Forensic Services on 27 June 2016.

It said that eight charges against the MD related to recruitment and remuneration of employees and three charges related to procurement. The board said that it served Nair in July.

“The board offered, in the interests of equity between the parties, to pay the legal fees of Ms Nair subject to certain limits and recover  in the event of any finding of wrongdoing.

“It is now two months since the charge sheet was served on Ms Nair and the enquiry has  not yet commenced as a result of the in limine application for legal representation,” it said.

The board added that the allegations made by SAMWU against Nair were also reported to the Public Protector, with the investigation still ongoing.

“It has become clear that the direct and indirect financial implications and the associated  time implications of proceeding with a lengthy disciplinary enquiry by an arbitrator, will significantly outweigh the benefits of proceeding with the enquiry,” the Pikitup board said.

“We wish Ms Nair well in her future endeavours,” it said.
