Here’s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:
- NPA head Shaun Abrahams has received representations from two of the three en facing fraud charges in the SARS saga, and must now review his decisions to pursue the case. Ivan Pillay and Oupa Magashula have asked for a review – while finance minister Pravin Gordhan has not. Gordhan believes Abrahams is determined to push ahead with the case, and called the invitation to ask for a review ‘pointless’
- The Public Investment Corporation (PIC) has revealed the details of 250 unlisted investments – including a R1.1 billion loan to Iqbal Surve’s Sekunjalo for Independent Media. The investment company defended pumping the money into Sekunjalo, saying that media in South Africa remains untransformed.
- The Gupta family will be opposing finance minister Pravin Gordhan’s application to the court asking it to rule that he cannot get involved with the Gupta’s ongoing drama with SA banks. The family say the application is an abuse of process, and that Gordhan is playing political games.
- ANC Youth League leader Collen Maine has retracted his statement calling for ANC veterans to take up arms to defend Jacob Zuma – however the organisation insists he was ‘taken out of context’. The youth league said that Maine was not head of the veterans, so the call held no weight.
- South Africa’s rand rallied strongly to its firmest in one week on Tuesday as investors took a calmer view of charges brought against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. On Wednesday the rand was trading at R13.91 to the dollar, R17.07 to the pound and R15.27 to the euro.
